Madelia Lions Club Presents: Fly the Flag
The Madelia Lions Club is proud to introduce a new community project: the Fly the Flag program, an initiative to celebrate patriotism, honor Madelia Veterans, and support the continued work of the Lions Club in Madelia.

The Madelia Lions Club is proud to introduce a new community project: the Fly the Flag program, an initiative to celebrate patriotism, honor Madelia Veterans, and support the continued work of the Lions Club in Madelia. By participating, residents and businesses can display a full-size American flag on their property throughout the summer. The Madelia Lions Club handles the installation, display, removal, and off-season storage of these flags. 100% of proceeds from this program go directly back into our community through Lions Club service projects.
Starting at $50 per flag, the Madelia Lions Club will place a full-size American flag on a flagpole at your home, business, or other approved location in town. Flags will be installed before Armed Forces Day and flown all summer until POW/MIA Recognition Day on September 19, 2026. The Madelia Lions will:
- Drill a small 15” hole and install a PVC ground sleeve (we will contact Gopher State One Call before drilling to ensure no damages occur)
- Place and remove the flag and pole as needed
- Maintain and store the flags over the winter
This program replaces our former calendar fundraiser and ensures that 100% of funds raised continue supporting Lions service efforts in Madelia.
Flag flying information and costs
Flags will be proudly displayed all summer, including during the following seven patriotic holidays:
- Armed Forces Day (May 16th)
- Memorial Day (May 25th)
- Flag Day (June 14th)
- Independence Day (July 4th)
- Labor Day (September 7th)
- Patriot Day (September 11th)
- POW/MIA Recognition Day (September 19th)
Flying the American flag is a powerful symbol of unity and gratitude. By joining the Fly the Flag program, you are directly contributing to our community through supporting local service projects, benefiting both Madelia and the surrounding area.
U.S. Flag Code dictates that United States flags are not to be flown in the dark if not properly illuminated1. The Madelia Lions Club is offering a package deal to purchase both the flag service and a solar-powered illumination spotlight so that your flag can remain up 24/7 for $75; the Madelia Lions Club will cover a portion of the cost of the light so that you recieve it at a discounted price. If you have your own light or are able to take down your flag each evening at dusk, we have an option to buy just the flag service for $50. All flags that we provide are full-weather flags, meaning that they can be flown even in rain or incliment weather.
Where does the money go?
Proceeds from Madelia Lions Club fundraisers support a wide range of community, youth, and health initiatives. Our projects include maintaining the Lions Park and supporting local recreational spaces such as Watona Park and the St. Mary’s School playground; promoting youth development through the Peace Poster program, dictionaries for elementary students, and activities like youth bowling nights and Park Days events; as well, we work to strengthen our community through support of National Night to Unite and Madelia Be-Dazzled in the Park.
These funds also help support several of the core missions of the Lions Club International on a local level: fighting hunger, providing vision care, and assisting with diabetic care. We provide assistance for eye exams, eyeglasses, and eye surgeries, collect and recycle used eyeglasses, and participate in the Healthy Vision Collaborative here in Madelia. We provide scholarships for children to attend diabetic camps and volunteer at Meals on Wheels and the Backpack Program. We also support Special Olympics, Can Do Canines, provide holiday gifts for Madelia Living Meadows residents, assist individuals in need, and invest in lasting community projects such as the Madelia Hospital Tranquility Garden memorial bench. Funds from the Fly the Flag program contribute to these impactful community projects and help to make Madelia a better place for all of us.
The Madelia Lions Club thanks you for your continued support and for helping us keep the spirit of patriotism and service strong in our community!
The initial outlay for this project is funded by the Howard Rasmussen Memorial Trust.
